Sinamalé Bridge collision triggers parliamentary security probe

MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu) has requested that the People’s Majlis Security Services Committee (241 Committee) investigate a security lapse involving two unauthorised foreign vessels that collided with the Sinamalé Bridge.

The vessels, identified as the KG 1 and AL 1, reportedly entered Maldivian waters on 26 April without official clearance. Despite being anchored near the capital for approximately a week, authorities only flagged their presence on 3 May. The vessels, which were being held in Maldives Customs custody, broke free from their moorings due to rough seas on a Thursday night and struck a pillar of the Sinamalé Bridge. Following the collision, the Maldives National Defence Force reported that both vessels drifted under the bridge structure before sinking roughly 30 nautical miles offshore.

In his formal request to the Speaker of the People’s Majlis, MP Kudu raised concerns regarding maritime surveillance failures, the potential negligence of state agencies, and the coordination between institutions. He also sought clarification on the bridge’s insurance status, damage recovery efforts, and the welfare of the 20 Indian crew members involved. Housing and Infrastructure Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib stated that the incident did not cause major damage to the bridge structure.
