Sindh Assembly passes Local Government Act 2026

The Sindh Assembly has passed the Sindh Local Government Act 2026 by a majority vote, despite intense protests from opposition lawmakers. The legislation, presented by Law Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar, introduces amendments aimed at ensuring stability and continuity within the local government system.

Minister Lanjar stated that the amendments seek to prevent administrative vacuums by allowing existing mayors and elected representatives to remain in office until new elections are held. The bill also proposes that the Election Commission be notified of upcoming elections before current tenures expire, with a goal to complete the electoral process within 120 days of a tenure's end.

Opposition parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), and PTI, have rejected the bill. Critics argue the legislation undermines the devolution of power and could allow political figures to act as administrators if elections are delayed. MQM leaders described the move as “political dictatorship,” alleging it bypasses Supreme Court decisions regarding the transfer of powers to local governments. Opposition members have announced plans to challenge the law in court.
