Sindh CM proposes Karachi-Shanghai sister-city partnership

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has proposed a formal sister-city partnership between Karachi and Shanghai to enhance cooperation in urban planning, transportation, technology, and infrastructure. During a meeting with Shanghai Mayor Zhu Zhongming, both leaders discussed strengthening economic ties and promoting direct business links between the two major port cities.

Shah highlighted Karachi’s ongoing development projects, such as the Karachi Circular Railway, and requested Shanghai’s expertise in smart-city management, digital services, and integrated urban planning. The Shanghai mayor expressed interest in the proposed engagement.

In a separate technological move, the Government of Sindh has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Huawei to establish Pakistan’s first AI-native digital province. During a visit to Huawei’s Lianqiu Lake research and development center, Shah expressed interest in a broader partnership involving joint ventures and technology transfer, including the potential establishment of a research laboratory at Karachi Education City.
