Sindh High Court dismisses disqualification plea against Shazia Marri

The Sindh High Court (SHC) has dismissed a petition seeking the disqualification of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Shazia Marri over allegations of using a fake degree. The verdict concludes a legal matter that has spanned 13 years.

The court ruled that the petition was unmaintainable, stating that under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution, the High Court lacks the authority to disqualify a Member of Parliament. The judgment noted that similar objections were raised before an election tribunal in 2018 and subsequently rejected by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in 2022.

Furthermore, the court observed that an appeal regarding the matter was withdrawn from the Supreme Court in 2023. The petitioner had alleged that Marri used a 2002 degree belonging to another student with the same name, but the court maintained that a constitutional petition alone is insufficient to declare a person disqualified.
