Thessaloniki arsonist arrested for six fires in Sindos

A 59-year-old man has been arrested and faces felony charges for allegedly committing six intentional arsons in the Sindos area of Thessaloniki. The fires occurred over a three-day period, starting on Saturday, August 8, and continuing through Tuesday, August 11. The incidents destroyed approximately 35 stremmata of agricultural land, including dry grass and reeds. One fire even caused temporary disruptions to the railway network.

Security camera footage captured the suspect driving a blue vehicle to various locations, exiting the car to ignite vegetation with tissues, and quickly departing as smoke appeared. Following an investigation by the Fire Service's Arson Crimes Directorate, the man was apprehended.

During his appearance before a prosecutor, the suspect confessed to the acts, claiming he wanted to “relieve himself from work” due to extreme professional stress. He stated he had been drinking and used tissues to start the fires to vent his exhaustion. He has been granted a postponement to appear before an investigating magistrate on Friday, August 14.
