Sinem Dedetaş released from prison under house arrest
Sinem Dedetaş, the suspended Mayor of Üsküdar, has been released from the Karatepe Prison in Tekirdağ following a court decision to apply house arrest as a judicial control measure. Dedetaş had been detained on July 29 and arrested on July 31 as part of an investigation into alleged irregularities regarding building permits and occupancy certificates, including accusations of bribery and corruption.
Upon her release on October 29, Dedetaş expressed that while her release felt like a double celebration due to the Republic Day holiday, her joy was tempered by the fact that several of her colleagues remain in custody. Gunn Marit Helgesen, President of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, welcomed the decision and expressed hope that this would be a step toward Dedetaş’s full release and reinstatement to her duties.
In a separate legal matter, Şeniz Doğan, the Mayor of Merkezefendi, and her husband Mehmet Ali Doğan were among five individuals arrested in Denizli. The investigation into the Merkezefendi Municipality involves allegations of bribery, bid-rigging, and extortion. Supporters from the Yeni Party gathered at the courthouse to protest the arrests, claiming the investigation is politically motivated.
