Sines hosts environmental justice protests and plenary
The Environmental Justice Meeting concludes in Sines, Portugal, following a series of events that began in Melides. The initiative brings together civic movements, unions, and researchers to protest environmental and labor impacts along the Alentejo coast.
Key issues raised during the proceedings include the proliferation of intensive agriculture, water scarcity, real estate speculation, and the pressure from large-scale energy, tourism, and mining projects. Participants also highlighted concerns regarding labor precariousness in the region.
The final day of the event features a plenary session for grassroots collectives and a demonstration through the streets of Sines. Previous activities included debates on the future of Sines involving organizations such as Roda Inquieta, the SIEAP union, and ISCTE, as well as the premiere of the documentary ‘Litoral Alentejano: Zona de Sacrifício’.
