Sines Municipality requests government aid for water and sanitation

Álvaro Beijinha, the Mayor of Sines, met with the Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, to request public resources for critical infrastructure improvements. The municipality is facing increased pressure on its water supply and sanitation systems due to rapid industrial and population growth.

Key proposals include the construction of a new Wastewater Treatment Plant (ETAR) for the city of Sines. The Mayor estimated that such an investment could cost approximately 10 million euros and would reduce the reliance on 17 existing pumping stations that currently consume significant resources. Additionally, the municipality highlighted the need to address an aging water distribution network.

The meeting also addressed environmental concerns regarding the Sanchinha landfill, located on the border between Sines and Santiago do Cacém, which is situated near water catchment areas.
