Sines terminal handled 95% of Portugal's gas imports in 2025

The Sines terminal handled approximately 95% of all gas entering Portugal in 2025, according to a report from the Energy Services Regulatory Authority (ERSE). The primary origins for liquefied natural gas (LNG) were Nigeria, which accounted for 50% of discharge operations, and the United States at 43%. Russia contributed the remaining 7%, with three LNG tankers arriving from the country, maintaining a discharge level of 3.3 terawatt-hours (TWh).

Portugal aims to phase out Russian LNG imports by the beginning of 2027 in accordance with European regulations. Currently, the Spanish company Naturgy holds the sole long-term contract for importing Russian gas through Sines. The remaining 5% of gas entering the country arrived via pipelines through Spanish interconnections at Campo Maior and Valença do Minho.

ERSE also noted an overall improvement in the performance of gas transport and distribution networks in 2025, citing a reduction in the frequency and duration of supply interruptions. Approximately 0.7% of customer installations, or 10,861 out of 1,567,872 connected customers, were affected by interruptions.
