Singapore advances manufacturing and quantum technology sectors
Singapore is aggressively advancing its technological capabilities in both manufacturing innovation and quantum science to secure long-term economic competitiveness. In the manufacturing sector, companies are increasingly choosing between patent protection for disclosed inventions and trade secrets for confidential processes, such as proprietary algorithms and production parameters, to protect their intellectual property.
Simultaneously, the nation is transitioning quantum research into commercial opportunities through its National Quantum Strategy. This initiative includes a commitment to invest approximately SGD 300 million over five years to enhance engineering, commercialization, and talent development. The strategy is coordinated by the National Quantum Office under the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and is part of the broader RIE2030 research plan.
Key focus areas include quantum computing, sensing, and secure communications. Specific programs like the National Quantum Computing Hub and the National Quantum Processor Initiative aim to build local technical capabilities. The country is also leveraging its significant semiconductor manufacturing base to integrate into the quantum supply chain. Early commercial applications are being explored in finance, through collaborations like the one between United Overseas Bank and the Centre for Quantum Technologies, and in drug discovery through partnerships with firms like Qubit Pharmaceuticals.
