Singapore and New Zealand sign food and fuel security deal

Singapore and New Zealand have signed the Agreement on Trade in Essential Supplies to secure fuel and food supply chains. The deal ensures that both nations will not impose unnecessary export restrictions on agreed essential supplies, even during periods of supply chain disruption. This agreement comes as tensions in the Middle East threaten shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global energy transit.

New Zealand relies on Singapore for approximately one-third of its refined fuel, including diesel essential for its agricultural sector. In return, Singapore depends on New Zealand for about 14 percent of its total food imports.

In a separate regional development discussed at the Pacific Islands Forum, the United States is expected to announce a US$60 million fuel security deal for the Pacific region. Additionally, the United States and New Zealand are co-funding a US$50 million port upgrade in the Cook Islands' Penrhyn Atoll, with New Zealand contributing US$10 million to the project.
