Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong to receive salary increase to S$3.6 million

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has announced a significant increase in political salaries, the first major adjustment in 15 years. Effective October 15, 2026, Wong’s annual salary package will rise from S$2.2 million to S$3.6 million, approximately US$2.85 million. To address public sensitivity regarding the pay gap, Wong pledged to donate the entirety of his salary increase to charitable causes for the next five years, provided he remains in office.

The adjustment also affects other ministers, with entry-level ministerial salaries increasing from S$1.1 million to S$1.8 million. Most ministers will receive a performance-based adjustment of up to 9%. The government justifies these high compensation levels as a strategic measure to attract high-quality talent from the private sector and to mitigate corruption risks by maintaining competitive pay.

Singapore’s salary framework uses the income of the top 1,000 citizens as a benchmark, applying a 40% discount to reflect the ethos of public service. While the move aims to ensure leadership quality, it has sparked debate regarding economic inequality and the widening gap between political officials and the average citizen.
