Singapore bans Massive Attack members over pro-Palestinian flag display
Singapore's police barred two core members of the British trip‑hop group Massive Attack—Robert Del Naja and Grant Marshall—from re‑entering the city‑state after they unfurled a Palestinian flag and shouted “Free Palestine” during a concert at The Star Theatre on 29 July. The authorities said the act violated public order and flag laws and could threaten racial and religious harmony. Both musicians were investigated, issued stern warnings, detained for questioning, had hotel rooms searched and passports temporarily confiscated before being released.
Massive Attack described the treatment as “surprising and disappointing,” noting that audience members also chanted “Free Palestine.” The band urged Singapore to allow freedom of expression and to adopt the UN International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which the country has not ratified.
