Singapore businesses and youth express economic concerns
A recent survey by the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) reveals that rising business costs are the primary concern for companies in Singapore, cited by 71.8% of respondents. Geopolitical tensions and global economic uncertainty, particularly conflicts in the Middle East, have contributed to concerns regarding operational costs, market uncertainty, and supply chain disruptions.
Business sentiment appears cautious; while 78% of companies expect to remain profitable, more than half anticipate lower profits compared to the previous year. Only 20% of respondents expressed optimism regarding their business prospects, while 34% were pessimistic. Regarding expansion, companies identified Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Vietnam, and Thailand as top target markets. Additionally, 45% of firms are experimenting with artificial intelligence, though high costs and skill shortages remain barriers.
Parallel concerns regarding economic stability are reflected among Singapore's youth. Data from the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) and the National Youth Council (NYC) shows that while 76% of young people are confident in Singapore's national future, 66% expressed anxiety regarding their own personal futures. Key challenges cited by youth include the rising cost of living and uncertainty in various career paths.
