Singapore charges Myanmar national with terrorism financing over Gaza funds

A 23‑year‑old Myanmar national who is a Singapore permanent resident will be charged in Singapore court on 29 July for financing terrorism. Internal Security Department (ISD) investigations found he became radicalised online after exposure to Islam‑phobic content following the October 2023 Hamas attacks and later to far‑right anti‑Jewish narratives, leading him to post hateful messages toward Muslims, Jews, immigrants and LGBT people.

In August 2024 he transferred US $72.28 (S$93.33) via PayPal to an overseas user on the X platform who claimed the money was needed to buy military equipment for use in Gaza. He also attempted an additional US $1 transfer. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) referred the case to the Commercial Affairs Department (CAD), which confirmed the transfers. He will be charged under Section 4(1)(a) of the Terrorism (Suppression of Financing) Act 2002, a serious offence regardless of the amount.
