Singapore expands copper futures market amid electrical grid boom

Singapore is strengthening its position as a major Asian commodity trading hub by expanding its copper futures market. This development is driven by rising global demand for copper, fueled by the expansion of electrical grids, the growth of renewable energy, the rise of electric vehicles, and the increasing requirements of data centers.

To facilitate access for Asian market participants to international price hedging and trading instruments, the Singapore Exchange (SGX) and the London Metal Exchange (LME) have developed non-ferrous metal futures contracts, including copper. This comes amid a period of high volatility and record highs for the metal on the LME, caused by supply constraints, mining operational issues, and high structural demand expectations.
