Singapore expands infrastructure and workforce for data centre growth

Singapore is undergoing significant infrastructure and workforce shifts driven by a surge in data centre demand and artificial intelligence investment. According to Indeed Hiring Lab data, job postings mentioning data centres reached 4.6 per cent in August, more than doubling the level seen two years ago. This expansion is creating diverse employment opportunities beyond software development, including roles in management, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, and sales.

To support this growth, the nation is accelerating power grid upgrades. The Energy Market Authority projects peak electricity demand will grow between 2.9 per cent and 6.5 per cent annually over the next decade, fueled by data centres, advanced manufacturing, and a growing electric vehicle fleet. The electrical network is transitioning toward a decentralized model that incorporates solar power, battery storage, and potential low-carbon electricity imports to maintain reliability.
