Singapore Explores Observer Role in Global Combat Air Programme

Singapore has begun exploratory discussions with the United Kingdom, Italy and Japan about the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), a trilateral effort to develop a sixth‑generation fighter aircraft slated for entry into service around 2035. The talks are preliminary and focus on gathering information, with Singapore considering an observer status similar to Canada’s recent entry, allowing access to technical and industrial developments without early‑stage development risk.

The move aligns with the Republic of Singapore Air Force’s long‑term modernization plans. Currently operating F‑15SGs, upgraded F‑16s and receiving its first F‑35s, the RSAF sees the sixth‑generation program as a future replacement option and a way to keep pace with regional security challenges, especially in the South China Sea.
