Singapore faces haze risk from regional fires in Kalimantan and Sumatra

Singapore is experiencing a resurgence of haze as smoke plumes from fires in Kalimantan and southern Sumatra drift toward the city-state. As of September 21, 2026, Singapore’s 24-hour PSI has fluctuated in the Moderate to Low Unhealthy range, with 1-hour PM2.5 concentrations recorded between 19 and 36 µg/m3.

The Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA) has issued a rare “Red” rating for 2026, indicating a high risk of severe haze episodes. This heightened risk is attributed to regional fires, as well as climatic factors such as El Niño and a potential positive Indian Ocean Dipole, which contribute to hotter and drier conditions conducive to spreading vegetation fires.

While some showers have occurred, dry conditions are expected to persist in southeastern Sumatra and southwestern Kalimantan. Prevailing winds from the southeast continue to pose a risk of smoke haze affecting Singapore. Residents are advised to monitor PSI levels and PM2.5 concentrations for health planning.
