Singapore Government Acquires Lee Kuan Yew’s 38 Oxley Road Home

The Singapore government completed the acquisition of 38 Oxley Road, the former residence of founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, on 31 July. The site, gazetted as a National Monument in December 2025 and slated for acquisition in January 2026, will now be managed by the Singapore Land Authority and the National Heritage Board.

Authorities will carry out necessary maintenance while the property remains closed to the public. A detailed study is under way to determine how the historic bungalow could be developed into a public space, with the interior preserved as it was during Lee’s lifetime and not to be displayed, recorded, or replicated elsewhere. The house, built in 1898, hosted early 1950s PAP meetings that contributed to Singapore’s path to self‑government and independence.

The move follows a long‑running family dispute over the property’s future, involving Lee’s sons Lee Hsien Loong and Lee Hsien Yang, and their sister Lee Wei Ling, who have contested the government’s handling of the site.
