Singapore to redevelop Gillman Barracks and Maju Forest for new housing
The Singapore government, represented by Minister of State for National Development Alvin Tan, is reviewing plans to develop parts of Gillman Barracks and the adjacent Maju Forest (Sunset Way area) for public housing while retaining selected green and heritage features. The proposals call for clearing roughly 15 hectares of Maju Forest and about 10 hectares of forested land near Gillman Barracks, with an estimated eight hectares of forest, a natural stream and the old Jurong railway line to be preserved. Key historic buildings and ecological corridors at Gillman Barracks are also slated for retention. Public consultation on the environmental and heritage impact assessments runs until 6 August, and the government says the plans are not finalised. The redevelopment has sparked debate, with around 40,000 petition signatures urging preservation and concerns from residents, nature groups and heritage advocates about biodiversity loss, including the critically endangered Sunda pangolin that inhabits Maju Forest.
