Singapore increases construction safety inspections

Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has intensified inspections within the construction sector to address rising safety concerns. The heightened surveillance focuses on machinery safety, work at heights, vehicle security, and falling objects.

This strategic shift follows data from 2024, which showed an increase in workplace fatalities and serious injuries. During that year, Singapore recorded 43 work-related deaths and 587 serious injuries, with the mortality rate rising to 1.2 deaths per 100,000 workers compared to 0.99 in 2023. The construction sector specifically accounted for 20 deaths and a total of 166 fatal or serious accidents, with its mortality rate increasing from 3.4 to 3.7 per 100,000 workers.

In response to these figures, the MOM conducted over 17,000 labor inspections across various sectors in 2024, prioritizing high-risk activities to mitigate preventable accidents.
