Singapore introduces stricter fines for public transport misconduct
Singapore has introduced stricter regulations for conduct on public buses to align with existing rules for its rail network. Passengers using mobile devices or tablets to play music or videos loudly without headphones may face fines of up to 500 Singapore dollars (approximately 330 euros).
Other prohibited behaviors include eating and drinking on board, littering, or placing feet on seats, which carry similar maximum fines. For more serious offenses—such as endangering others, obstructing movement at stations, or damaging public transport infrastructure—penalties can reach up to 5,000 Singapore dollars (approximately 3,300 euros).
These rules apply to buses, bus stations, and terminals. While bus drivers are not authorized to issue fines, they may warn passengers or, in severe cases, request their removal from the vehicle. Authorized transport employees will document violations for further action by the relevant transport authorities.
