Singapore launches consultation on AI and intellectual property laws

The Singapore Ministry of Law (MinLaw) and the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) have launched a public consultation to examine the impact of artificial intelligence on the nation’s intellectual property regime. The consultation period runs from August 26, 2026, to October 22, 2026.

The initiative seeks to determine if existing IP laws remain “fit for purpose” as AI technologies change how individuals and businesses create, invent, and conduct research. Key areas of focus include copyright and patents, specifically regarding the use of copyrighted works for training AI systems and the legal treatment of inventions created with AI assistance.

Regarding copyright, the government is investigating the clarity of the current computational data analysis exception, which allows for text and data mining without individual permission from copyright owners. Officials are also exploring how to manage copyright risks in AI deployment, how to assess responsibility among developers and users, and how to implement industry-led technical measures to protect rights owners.
