Singapore launches government dating service for public employees
The Singapore government has launched FirstDate, a pilot digital matchmaking service designed exclusively for public sector employees aged 21 to 35. Developed by the government technology agency GovTech, the initiative aims to address the nation’s record-low fertility rates, which reached approximately 0.85 to 0.87 children per woman.
Unlike traditional dating apps that rely on swiping through profiles, FirstDate utilizes the Nobel Prize-winning Gale-Shapley stable marriage algorithm. Participants complete a detailed questionnaire covering interests, values, lifestyle, and relationship preferences. The system then proposes a single match to each user, who has 72 hours to accept or reject the pairing.
The program targets single, widowed, or divorced civil servants. To encourage engagement, the service may include “dating missions” to help break the ice. This experimental approach comes as Singapore implements various policies to combat an aging population, including financial incentives for families with children.
