Singapore leaders warn against rising anti-Indian online rhetoric

Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has warned against the normalization of racial prejudice following a surge in online racist and xenophobic rhetoric targeting the Indian community. The hostility emerged in response to two recent events: the devastating floods in Nepal, which left nine Singaporeans missing, and news regarding Singapore Airlines’ involvement with Air India.

Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam has ordered a police investigation into what he described as “shameful, vile, and completely unacceptable” comments. These included derogatory racial slurs and posts questioning whether rescue efforts for victims in Nepal should be prioritized based on ethnicity.

In response to debates regarding Indian nationals forming social enclaves in Singapore, former Nominated Member of Parliament Calvin Cheng noted that such tribalism is a common historical pattern among immigrant groups, including Chinese immigrants, though he emphasized the necessity of assimilation and integration in a foreign country.
