Singapore LTA launches feasibility study for BRT in Tuas South

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore announced on 31 July 2026 that it will conduct a feasibility study on introducing a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in the Tuas South industrial zone. The study will assess whether a medium‑capacity BRT service – either conventional high‑capacity buses or a tram‑like system with dedicated lanes and traffic‑signal priority – can provide faster, more reliable links between workplaces in Tuas South and existing or future MRT stations. Tuas South was selected because of major developments such as Tuas Port and expected growth in industry and employment.

LTA noted that BRT can offer greater capacity than regular buses while requiring less infrastructure than a new MRT or LRT line, making it a potentially cost‑effective solution for medium‑density corridors. The authority will evaluate both conventional BRT models (articulated or bi‑articulated buses) and tram‑style BRT examples from cities such as Zhuzhou and Yibin in China, as well as systems in Shanghai, Seoul, Curitiba, Istanbul and Brisbane. No construction decision has been made; the study will examine benefits, costs, traffic impacts and integration with existing transport modes before any implementation is confirmed.
