Singapore man charged after fake AI crocodile image triggers reservoir search
A 30-year-old Myanmar national, Ye Lin, is facing legal charges in Singapore after using Google Gemini to create a fake image of a crocodile at Pandan Reservoir. The AI-generated image was sent to a colleague on August 20, triggering a significant response from authorities.
Singapore’s national water agency, the Public Utilities Board (PUB), and the National Parks Board launched search and capture operations at the reservoir. As a precaution, water activities managed by the Singapore Rowing Association and the Singapore Canoe Federation were temporarily suspended. While PUB initially used multiple AI detection tools to verify the image, the results were inconclusive, leading to the decision to prioritize public safety and halt activities.
Following confirmation that the image was fake, Ye Lin was charged with communicating a false message and obstructing the course of justice. The latter charge stems from allegations that he deleted the AI-generated image and his Gemini app history from his phone on August 21 to conceal evidence. He has indicated his intention to plead guilty, and the case is scheduled for further court proceedings on November 10.
