Singapore man faces prison for AI-generated crocodile hoax

Ye Lin, a 30-year-old Myanmar national living in Singapore, faces legal action after using artificial intelligence to create a realistic image of a saltwater crocodile in the Pandan Reservoir.

The hoax, which began when Lin sent the image to a colleague, triggered a massive two-day response from authorities. The National Water Agency (PUB) and the National Parks Board launched search and capture operations, while water activities were suspended for the Singapore Rowing Association and the Singapore Canoe Federation.

Digital forensics confirmed the image was a fabrication. Authorities also noted that Lin attempted to obstruct the investigation by deleting the AI application and his usage history. Lin faces charges for spreading false information and obstructing justice, which could result in up to three years in prison and fines of 10,000 Singapore dollars, or up to seven years for obstruction of justice.
