Singapore leaders denounce racist online comments targeting Indians

Singaporean leaders, including Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam, have denounced a wave of racist and xenophobic online comments targeting the Indian community.

The hateful rhetoric emerged in two primary contexts: discussions regarding the devastating Nepal floods, where comments targeted missing Singaporeans, and debates surrounding Singapore Airlines’ investment in Air India. Minister Shanmugam described the remarks as “shameful, nasty and totally unacceptable,” noting that some comments utilized derogatory stereotypes and attacked the motives of executives based on their ethnicity.

In response, the police have been tasked with investigating the comments to ensure individuals cannot hide behind online anonymity. Additionally, the Ministry of Digital Development and Information will engage social media platforms to request the removal of content that breaches community guidelines. Prime Minister Wong emphasized that while robust debate is necessary, prejudice must not be normalized, as it threatens the nation's social cohesion.
