Singapore Minister defends SIA's autonomy in Air India investment decisions

Singapore Senior Minister K Shanmugam has stated that Temasek portfolio companies, specifically Singapore Airlines (SIA), must be allowed to make commercial investment decisions without political interference or pressure. This comes in response to public and political debate regarding SIA’s potential involvement in a US$1.5 billion equity injection for Air India.

Air India, which is being merged with SIA’s Vistara joint venture, is seeking fresh equity following a US$2 billion loss in the previous financial year. Shanmugam emphasized that while shareholders and the public deserve transparency and rigorous assessment, government involvement in individual investment decisions would compromise commercial discipline and ultimately disadvantage Singaporeans.

He clarified that SIA, not Temasek, holds the decision-making authority regarding the Air India investment. Any funding would be split proportionally between Tata Sons, which holds 74.9%, and SIA, which holds 25.1%.
