Singapore mosques hold Eid al-Adha animal sacrifices as communities gather

On 27 May 2024, Masjid Al‑Istighfar in Tampines resumed in‑person Eid al‑Adha (Hari Raya Aidiladha) animal sacrifices after a seven‑year hiatus caused by the Covid‑19 pandemic. Around 350 goats, sheep and other livestock were offered, with volunteers and families participating from early morning. The mosque’s manager noted the renewed communal spirit and the logistical challenges when a supplier failed to secure export permits for some animals.

In a separate ceremony, Masjid Taman Harmoni in Kajang (Selangor) attracted attention on social media when a camel was brought for sacrifice, a rarity in Malaysia. Netizens commented on the high price of the animal—about RM 42,000—and shared memories of camel meat from the early 2000s. Both events highlighted the revival of traditional Eid practices in the region.
