Singapore passes Digital Infrastructure Bill for data centres
Singapore has passed the Digital Infrastructure Bill to enforce stricter security and resilience standards for major data centres. The legislation aims to ensure energy efficiency and operational continuity, addressing risks such as physical security, cyber threats, and recovery from system misconfigurations, fires, floods, or power outages.
Approximately two-thirds of the 70 data centres in Singapore fall under the new regulations. Eligibility is determined by thresholds including an average annual revenue from Singaporean users of at least S$100 million over three years, or operations requiring at least 10 megawatts of electrical capacity.
Additionally, amendments to the Cybersecurity Act will require most major data centres to adhere to cyber-incident reporting requirements similar to those currently applied to critical information infrastructure operators. Senior Minister of State Tan Kiat How noted that disruptions to these facilities can have ripple effects across the entire economy and society due to the widespread reliance on shared digital services and cloud providers.
