Singapore plans to merge three islands for future industrial use

Singapore is considering a large-scale land reclamation project to merge three southern islands—Semakau, Bukom, and Sudong—into a single larger landmass. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced the long-term plan during his National Day speech on August 23, 2026.

The proposed area, located south of Jurong Island, aims to support next-generation industries and strengthen the nation's energy and infrastructure resilience. The project draws inspiration from the successful development of Jurong Island, which was created by connecting offshore islands to form a global petrochemical and energy hub.

The three islands currently serve distinct strategic functions: Semakau is the nation's primary landfill, Bukom hosts oil refineries, and Sudong contains an airstrip used by the Singapore Armed Forces. Prime Minister Wong emphasized that the project is currently in the study phase and is being carefully examined to determine future steps.
