Singapore population rises to 6.21 million amid construction growth
Singapore’s total population reached 6.21 million as of June 2026, representing a 1.6% increase from June 2025. According to the National Population and Talent Division (NPTD) Population in Brief 2026 report, the growth was primarily driven by a 3.7% rise in the non-resident population, which grew to 1.98 million. This increase was largely attributed to more work permit holders in the construction sector supporting major projects, including Changi Airport Terminal 5, the Marina Bay Sands expansion, and various transport and housing infrastructure developments.
The citizen population grew by 0.7% to 3.68 million, while the permanent resident population remained stable at 0.55 million.
Demographic data for 2025 indicated a decline in certain social metrics. Citizen marriages fell by 5.6% to 21,671, and citizen births decreased by 10.8% to 26,071. The resident total fertility rate (TFR) also saw a decline, dropping to 0.87 in 2025 from 0.97 in 2024.
