Singapore prioritizes worker protection amid AI integration

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has outlined the nation's approach to integrating artificial intelligence, emphasizing worker protection and the equitable distribution of technological benefits. Speaking at the Forbes Global CEO Conference, Wong stated that while AI will inevitably transform job roles, the government encourages companies to treat layoffs as a last resort.

A key component of Singapore's strategy is the collaborative relationship between the government, employers, and trade unions. This partnership facilitates the use of government subsidies, managed through unions, to upskill employees in information technology. In cases where displacement occurs, the focus remains on providing fair notice, severance, and retraining opportunities.

The Prime Minister noted that the AI transition has already provided economic benefits, particularly in the semiconductor sector with companies like Micron and GlobalFoundries. These advancements have contributed to Singapore maintaining a 5% GDP growth rate for three consecutive years. The government aims to leverage these opportunities to build new skills and create high-quality jobs for its citizens.
