Singapore raises solar capacity target to 3 GWp by 2030

Singapore has reached 2 GWp of installed solar capacity, achieving its original 2030 target five years ahead of schedule. In response to this progress, the government has increased its solar capacity goal to 3 GWp by 2030.

Due to limited land availability, the nation is shifting focus from rooftops to building facades. While rooftop solar currently accounts for over 80% of installed capacity, spatial constraints and the use of roof space for gardens or equipment are limiting further growth. Researchers are now looking toward Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV), which incorporates solar cells directly into walls, window shades, and railings. The Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore estimates that building facades could provide approximately 38% of the country's total techno-economic solar potential.

On the commercial side, the number of private residential buildings with solar installations grew from roughly 1,400 in 2020 to approximately 6,900 in 2025. Meanwhile, the company Solar SG is exploring a potential initial public offering (IPO) to support its expansion within the residential, commercial, and industrial solar markets.
