Singapore to build public housing on part of Maju Forest

The Housing Development Board (HDB) announced on 10 July that roughly 15 hectares of the 23‑hectare Maju Forest in Clementi’s Sunset Way will be cleared for a new public‑housing estate. About 8 hectares of the forest will be retained to preserve a freshwater stream, high‑biodiversity vegetation and wildlife corridors, including the Old Jurong Line nature trail. HDB said planting native species, salvaging significant flora and phased site clearance will help fauna move safely to adjacent green spaces.

Nature groups were consulted during planning, and the estate will incorporate native greenery and upgraded trails – a 2‑km Clementi Nature Trail and a proposed 4‑km Old Jurong Line trail. The agency opened an online feedback portal until 6 August. Conservationists warned that pangolins and birds could be displaced if the remaining corridor is insufficient, recalling a 2024 cut of 3.6 ha for the Brookvale Drive project.
