Singapore to spend $4.06 billion on F-35 fighter jets

Singapore has officially disclosed the costs associated with its acquisition of the F-35 Lightning II fighter jet. According to a U.S. Department of Defense report, the purchase of 20 aircraft and related equipment will cost Singapore $4.06 billion.

The delivery schedule indicates that the first aircraft will arrive at Ebbing Air Force Base in Arkansas by late 2026. Singaporean pilots will undergo training at this location, where 12 F-35B variants—capable of short takeoff and vertical landing—will be stationed. The remaining eight F-35A aircraft are expected to be deployed to Tengah Air Base in Singapore.

While the F-35 program faces ongoing discussions regarding high operating costs and technical challenges, its core advantages remain its stealth capabilities and advanced network-centric warfare systems. Experts note that the aircraft is designed to detect and engage enemies from long distances, minimizing the need for close-range dogfights.
