Singapore unveils biological data center prototype using human neurons

A consortium including the National University of Singapore (NUS) Medicine, Australian biotech firm Cortical Labs, and data center operator DayOne has unveiled a biological computing prototype in Singapore. The system, described as the world’s first independently operated biologically integrated server rack, utilizes 20 CL1 biological computing units that incorporate lab-grown human neurons alongside traditional silicon hardware.

The prototype contains approximately 16 million living human neurons. These neurons, derived from stem cells, are integrated with microelectrode arrays to exchange electrical signals with conventional electronics. This hybrid approach aims to explore whether biological neural networks can perform specific computing tasks, such as those required for AI, more efficiently and with significantly lower energy consumption than traditional silicon-based systems.

Maintaining the biological components requires specialized life-support systems to regulate temperature and chemical environments, with the neurons requiring feeding every three days. Each CL1 unit consumes roughly 30 watts, including life support, which is notably lower than high-end traditional GPUs. Cortical Labs CEO Hon Weng Chong stated the prototype moves biological computing “from research to commercial application,” noting potential future uses in drug discovery, cybersecurity, and robotics.
