Global workforce faces challenges from AI and automation

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence and automation is reshaping global labor markets, prompting diverse responses across different sectors and regions.

In Australia, the newly elected Australian Council for Trade Unions (ACTU) president, Emma Kingdon, has warned that AI is automating entire jobs and being used for workplace surveillance. Kingdon pledged to advocate for greater worker protections and higher wages as the technology impacts creative and journalistic industries.

In Singapore, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are transitioning from basic digitalization to AI adoption to manage costs and improve productivity. However, professionals face increasing pressure to continuously upgrade both hard technical skills and soft skills, such as critical thinking and emotional intelligence, to remain competitive.

In South Africa, while there is significant enthusiasm for AI, businesses face obstacles including budget constraints, data readiness, and the difficulty of measuring return on investment. Only 9% of surveyed organizations reported having a fully mature AI strategy.

In the financial sector, HSBC was recognized at the Asian Innovation Excellence Awards 2026 for its AI for Leaders Programme, which aims to equip senior leaders in Risk and Compliance with the strategic frameworks necessary for effective AI adoption.
