China arrests 52 Singaporeans in Guangxi over suspected pyramid scheme

Chinese authorities have arrested 52 Singaporean citizens in the Guangxi Autonomous Region during a law enforcement operation targeting suspected pyramid scheme activities. The arrests are reportedly linked to the “1040 Sunshine Project,” an illegal scheme that allegedly lures participants with promises of high financial returns through recruitment and substantial upfront payments.

Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Singapore Police Force confirmed the detentions, noting that embassy staff in Beijing and consular officials in Guangzhou have conducted multiple visits to provide consular support and check on the detainees' well-being. Second Minister for Foreign Affairs Sim Ann stated that while Singapore is providing assistance and communicating with Chinese authorities, the government will not interfere in China’s judicial processes.

In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that China handles criminal cases involving foreign nationals in accordance with the law and ensures their legal rights are protected. Investigations by Chinese authorities are ongoing.
