Singaporeans face rising healthcare costs and financial gaps
Recent findings and personal accounts highlight growing concerns regarding healthcare costs and financial preparedness among Singaporeans. A poll by Prudential Singapore reveals a significant gap in financial readiness for critical illness recovery. While 67 per cent of respondents expect recovery from a severe-stage illness to take more than a year, only 29 per cent believe their savings could cover household expenses during that period. Furthermore, 64 per cent of those surveyed estimate they would need more than S$200,000 to manage the financial impact of a severe illness.
In response to rising medical expenses, some individuals are exploring cross-border healthcare options. One account describes seeking specialist care in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, noting that the process offered lower costs, high quality of care, and greater efficiency compared to local alternatives. This trend suggests that managing healthcare expenses through medical tourism is becoming a practical consideration for long-term financial planning in the region.
