Edilberto Portillo shot in armed attack near Rodeo Texcoco

Edilberto Portillo, the founder and vocalist of the regional Mexican music group ‘Beto y sus Canarios’, was critically wounded in an armed attack on Saturday night in Chicoloapan, State of Mexico. The incident occurred around 10:00 PM near the Rodeo Texcoco venue on the Mexico-Texcoco highway as Portillo was disembarking from his group’s bus to perform in the ‘Los 4 Patrones de Tierra Caliente’ show.

Reports indicate that at least three armed individuals intercepted the singer and fired multiple shots. Portillo sustained approximately five gunshot wounds, including one to the face. He was rushed to a hospital in the Mexico City area, where he is reported to be in serious condition and receiving intensive care.

Authorities from the State of Mexico Attorney General’s Office responded to the scene, recovering spent shell casings and investigating the site. While the attack caused significant alarm among attendees, the scheduled musical event continued. As of now, no suspects have been detained, and the motive for the targeted shooting remains unknown.
