Singer Nico Santos reveals the origin of his stage name

Singer and 'The Voice of Germany' coach Nico Santos has shared the history behind his professional name. Born Nico Wellenbrink, the 33-year-old artist adopted the name Santos due to his upbringing in Mallorca, Spain.

During his 20 years living on the island, locals found his original surname difficult to pronounce because of the double 'l'. He began being called Santi or Santos, inspired by the Spanish singer Romeo Santos. Santos noted that the stage name sounds warmer than his birth name, which he joked sounded more like a politician's name.

His father, Egon Wellenbrink, was a former DJ who later became well-known in Germany as the 'Melitta-Man' in television advertisements before moving the family to Mallorca.
