Singleton Council approves $7.2 million indoor pool cover tender
Singleton Council has approved a $7.2 million tender for a new roof structure and cover for the Gym and Swim indoor 25m pool. The decision was reached during a closed council meeting where a confidential motion regarding the tender was decided by a seven-to-two vote.
Councillor Hollee Jenkins, who proposed a motion to address concerns over the project's cost, expressed frustration following the outcome. Jenkins stated that the true cost of the tender could lead to intergenerational debt and necessitate future rate increases for local residents. She clarified that while no councillors opposed the roof structure itself, the debate centered on affordability and minimizing impact on facility use during construction.
Councillor Peree Watson, who seconded Jenkins' motion, also expressed disappointment that the proposal was not supported. Watson emphasized the need to balance community service levels with the council's current financial challenges, advocating for decisions that prioritize value for money for ratepayers.
