Sinj Mayor Miro Bulj boycotts government seating at Sinjska Alka
Sinj Mayor Miro Bulj staged a political protest during the 311th Sinjska Alka by refusing to sit with government representatives in the ceremonial box. In a social media post titled "Alka narodu" (Alka for the people), Bulj criticized the Croatian government for neglecting the Sinj and Cetina regions.
Bulj cited several grievances, including the closure of the local maternity hospital, unfulfilled promises regarding a general hospital, poor transport connectivity, and the handling of hazardous waste in Lika, which he characterized as "pure treason." He stated that Sinj should not serve as a backdrop for political appearances and that the city refuses to be humiliated.
His absence left an empty seat between the president of the Knights' Alka Society, Stipe Jukić, and the Split-Dalmatia County Prefect, Blaženko Boban. Alkarskiy Vojvoda Marijo Šušnjara acknowledged the mayor in his traditional speech, saying, "Greetings to Mayor Miro Bulj, wherever he may be!"
The ruling HDZ party responded to the gesture on Facebook, accusing Bulj of "performing a show" driven by ego and a lack of achievements rather than genuine concern for the city.
