Mexico confronts rising sinkholes and water‑line failures amid heavy rains

In Veracruz, a 50‑metre slide exposed part of the Infonavit "Viviendas para el Bienestar" housing complex in Bosques de Río Medio after heavy July rains, prompting Infonavit to describe the damage as superficial and not structural. Real‑estate expert Pedro Fernández Martínez said the incident does not alter the overall soundness of property investment.

In Puebla, the state Infrastructure Secretariat ordered the concessionaire Agua de Puebla to repair a sinkhole on Tepeyac Street caused by deteriorated underground water pipes, as well as a leak on 20 Oriente Street. The company carried out emergency repairs, de‑watering and will repave the affected roadway.

In Xalapa, the Municipal Water and Sanitation Commission (CMAS) is repairing a 16‑inch water conduit in the Alto Pixquiac area near Perote. Work is 50 % complete despite the challenging 2,700‑metre‑high, cliff‑side location, requiring safety lines and specialized equipment.

In Ciudad Juárez, a sinkhole on Avenida Ponciano Arriaga caused a 24‑inch drainage pipe to collapse after recent rain saturation. The Junta Municipal de Agua y Saneamiento (JMAS) will replace roughly 30 metres of pipe and has installed detours to maintain traffic flow.
