Sinkholes Disrupt Roads in Mexico City and Guadalajara

A large sinkhole measuring about two metres in diameter and six metres deep opened on Guty Cárdenas street at its intersection with Ricardo Castro in the Guadalupe Inn neighbourhood of Mexico City. The collapse was caused by a fractured water‑well and a broken drainage pipe, prompting the municipal authorities of Álvaro Obregón to close the road and begin extensive repairs, including rebuilding five metres of collector pipe, fixing three manholes, reconnecting drainage discharges and rehabilitating two storm‑water inlets. The work, coordinated by the Secretariat of Integral Water Management, Protection Civil and local officials, is expected to be completed by early next week. During repairs, a backhoe struck a natural‑gas pipe, causing a leak and heightening safety concerns.

In Guadalajara, a separate sinkhole appeared on Calle Frías in the centre of the city, creating a hazardous cavity that has impeded traffic and raised fears among residents. Neighbours have cordoned off the area and called on municipal authorities to intervene promptly to prevent accidents and address the underlying infrastructure deterioration.
