Sinkholes reopen in Mexico City and San Luis Potosí, authorities act

In San Luis Potosí, a sinkhole on José María Morelos street in the San Sebastián neighbourhood has remained unfilled for weeks. Residents say it is only marked with caution tape, posing a danger to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, and municipal officials have not yet taken remedial action despite repeated reports.

In Mexico City’s Gustavo A. Madero borough, a sinkhole about eight metres deep and wide re‑opened at the Deportivo Gertrudis Sánchez. The site had collapsed in August 2023, prompting a 26‑million‑peso repair that replaced 48 metres of pipe and renovated the facilities. The new hollow was traced to damage in a 1.83‑metre‑diameter drainage pipe beneath the sports complex. Authorities have cordoned the area, installed barriers and plan excavation and ground‑stabilisation work, warning that rain could worsen the situation.
